Summary:
Dr. Anand Kumar Nagwani, a Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon, shares an important message focused on the Northeastern region of India, which includes the Seven Sisters and Sikkim. He discusses Hypospadias, a common birth condition in male children where the urinary opening is not at its usual place on the penis. This condition is typically associated with three features — a hooded foreskin, abnormal location of the urethral opening, and a downward bend of the penis known as Chordee.
He emphasizes that many parents from the Northeast struggle to find proper treatment options due to limited surgical facilities nearby. While Assam offers some services, families often seek better care in Kolkata, where Dr. Nagwani’s center has extensive experience handling Hypospadias cases. The condition affects approximately 1 in 150 to 250 male births, making early diagnosis and expert intervention essential.
Dr. Nagwani advises that the ideal time for surgery is around the age of three, as the child is better developed and more cooperative by then. He encourages parents to seek guidance from specialized centers for the best outcomes and assures them of support throughout the treatment journey.
Doctor’s advice:
Namaskar, I am Dr. Anand Kumar Nagwani, Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon.
Today, the video I’m making is specially dedicated to our North East —This region, often referred to as the ‘Seven Sisters and One Brother,’ includes the states of Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Tripura, Assam, and Sikkim. Rich in culture and natural beauty, this part of the country holds a special place in our hearts and contributes immensely to the nation’s diversity and charm.. This is a very significant and beautiful part connected with our country, a truly beloved and scenic region.
Now, in this part of the country, we often find that some children are born with Hypospadias. Their parents often face confusion and worry — where should they go? How should they get it treated?
Let me explain to you a little about what Hypospadias actually is.
Hypospadias is a condition related to the penis, in which the external urethral meatus — that is, the opening through which urine passes — may be located anywhere from the top to the bottom of the penis. It’s a penile condition.
In this condition, we commonly observe three clinical features:
- Hooded Foreskin
- The external urethral meatus, which may be located anywhere from the top to the bottom
- And the third is Chordee, which means the curvature of the penis
When we look at the penis from the side, and we see it bending, this bending is what we medically call the Chordee of the penis.
So, these are the three primary findings associated with Hypospadias.
Now coming back to the parents in the North East — their biggest concern is, where do we go for treatment?
The nearest big location available to them is usually Assam, but even there, facilities for Hypospadias surgery are limited.
So, many of them search for treatment options and end up looking towards Kolkata, which is the nearest major city.
Here at our center in Kolkata, Hypospadias surgeries have been regularly performed for many years.
Hypospadias affects a significant number of male newborns, with estimates suggesting it appears in roughly one out of every 150 to 250 births, making it a relatively frequent condition.
To correct it, it is essential that you visit a dedicated Hypospadias center, where surgeons specialize in performing this surgery, and have long-term experience with it.
Now, there are specialist surgeons available specifically for Hypospadias surgery.
It is very important that if you are planning surgery for your child, then you should get it done at a proper place.
To help you navigate the treatment process, we’re here to offer clear and supportive directions
- First, you can directly contact us.

Another common issue many parents face is the language barrier — how to communicate?
We have created a Google Form. Using the link, you can write your concerns or issues in your own language in the description space provided in the form.
If possible, please try to write in English as well — it will help us understand your case better.
Once the form reaches us, you will also need to upload photographs of your child, which will make it much easier for us to proceed and provide you with proper guidance.
Once we receive your details, we will take some time to respond.
One of the most common questions we get is about the best age for Hypospadias surgery.
In our country, the most suitable time for Hypospadias surgery is typically before the child begins formal schooling — usually around the age of three.
At that age, the development of the penis is good, and also, the child begins to understand what is going to happen, making them more cooperative, which is a great advantage.
So, the reason I made this video today is specifically for our people from the North East, because they often face problems like — Where should we go? Who will guide us? How should we proceed?
For all these concerns, I have shared this information with you today.Stay happy, stay healthy, and may your child recover well — with this hope, I take your leave.
Namaskar.“
