FUT hair transplant

FUT or Follicular Unit Transplantation is a very common method of hair transplantation also known as Strip Harvesting method.
A strip of skin is harvested from the posterior scalp that is the area with good hair growth. The surgeon uses a single, double or triple based scalpel to remove the strips of hair-bearing tissue.

The strip is around 1-1.5X15-30 cm in size. The individual follicular unit grafts, which are small naturally formed groups of hair follicles, are dissected from the strip. Excess fibrous and fatty tissues are removed to avoid any damage to the follicular cells. The surgeon then punctures the sites to receive the grafts with fine needles and places them in the required density and pattern. The final part is performed by inserting the individual grafts at their place. This procedure might leave a thin linear scar in the donor area. The recovery period for strip harvesting is almost two weeks along with the removal of stitches or staples.

A highly advanced technique of hair transplantation, FUT is performed in such a way, which imitates the pattern of natural hair growth and is an ideal choice for people who have large bald areas on their head.
Thousands of these follicular unit grafts are placed into tiny incisions made on the bald areas of the patient’s scalp, also known as the ‘recipient areas’, in a single session. The hair growth from these grafts follow a very natural growth pattern, giving away no tell-tale signs of surgery.

The benefits of FUT procedure include:

▪️A large number of follicles can be transplanted in a single session.
▪️Provides better yield of hair compared to other hair procedures.
▪️An enhanced, natural-looking cosmetic effect, once the hair grows.
▪️More affordable than other hair procedures such as FUE.

To avoid any medical complication, certain preventive measures need to be taken after the hair transplant. Some of these include:

▪️Complete course of antibiotic should be taken to avoid any kind of infection.
The area treated should be guarded against direct sunlight.
▪️Proper dressing of wound on a daily basis to allow seepage of blood and tissue fluid.
▪️Cleaning of the area for prevention from the formation of scabs. However, the use of shampoo should be on the recommendation of the doctor only.

FUT surgery leaves a scar at the site of hair removal. The scar will fade over time but is permanent. The size of the scar depends on how many hair follicles were used during surgery. The scar is generally hidden by your hair, but it may be visible if you keep your hair short.

With FUT, doctors must be able to transplant follicular grafts to recipient sites with success rates between 95 and 98 per cent, and in some cases, even 100 per cent succeed. During the consultation process, doctors and patients should discuss the number of follicular units needed to achieve adequate coverage based on the level of the patient’s specific hair loss, as well as the direction of the hairline and the patient’s personal goals. It also must be discussed this time.

It is understood that transplanted hair follicles usually fall out before permanent follicles grow back. This can cause patients to express concern that a transplant has failed. What you experience is a normal part of the hair transplant process. A reputable hair transplant doctor will clearly outline the hair transplant process first so that patients understand the appropriate expectations until the final results are achieved.
