A HISTORY
WRITTEN IN
CONFIDENCE
"Breast augmentation is one of the oldest desires of medicine — and one of its most refined achievements. Understanding its journey helps every patient make a more informed, more empowered choice."
From experimental beginnings in the 1890s to the sophisticated, safety-led procedures of today, breast augmentation has evolved over 130 years into one of the most performed, most studied, and most trusted elective surgeries in the world. Here is that journey — from its earliest days to its arrival in Kolkata.
THE GLOBAL TIMELINE
From curiosity to craft — 130 years of breast augmentation surgery
The earliest recorded breast augmentation was performed in 1895 by German surgeon Vincenz Czerny, who transplanted a patient's own fatty growth to restore a breast after tumour removal. Surgeons across Europe then experimented with ivory, glass balls, ox cartilage, and rubber — none of which the body accepted well. Results were unpredictable and often harmful.
Surgeons began injecting liquid silicone directly into breast tissue — a practice that seemed promising but led to severe complications including tissue hardening and migration. Meanwhile, Dow Corning and pioneering plastic surgeons began exploring solid silicone as a contained, safer alternative. The groundwork for the modern implant was quietly being laid.
American plastic surgeons Thomas Cronin and Frank Gerow, working with Dow Corning, implanted the world's first silicone gel breast implant in Houston, Texas. This moment changed plastic surgery forever. The implant was a silicone shell filled with cohesive gel — a concept still used today, though vastly refined over six decades of research and innovation.
Saline-filled implants were introduced as an alternative — the same silicone shell, but filled with sterile salt water. A rupture would simply be absorbed by the body, which was considered safer. Breast augmentation became increasingly popular across the US and Western Europe, driven by cultural shifts around body image and the rise of cosmetic surgery as a mainstream, accepted choice.
The US FDA placed a moratorium on silicone gel implants amid concerns about rupture and possible links to autoimmune disease. This forced the medical community to rigorously study implant safety for over a decade — thousands of studies were conducted. By 2006, after exhaustive review, the FDA lifted the restriction, concluding that modern silicone implants were safe. This period produced the rigorous international safety standards that protect patients worldwide today.
Today's breast augmentation is defined by highly cohesive "gummy bear" implants, 3D imaging for pre-surgical planning, endoscopic precision, and a philosophy of natural, proportionate results. The surgery has become one of the most performed elective procedures globally — over 2 million annually worldwide — with safety and satisfaction rates that have never been higher.
HOW BREAST AUGMENTATION
CAME TO INDIA
India's relationship with cosmetic surgery began quietly in the 1970s and 80s, primarily in Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai, where a handful of plastic surgeons trained abroad brought back new techniques. Breast augmentation was performed sparingly — mostly for reconstructive purposes following mastectomy — due to prevailing social conservatism.
Economic liberalisation in the 1990s opened India to global media and beauty standards. A growing middle class gained both the financial means and the private courage to seek cosmetic procedures. By the 2000s, the procedure had spread to Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Pune — aided by the internet, which removed information barriers and connected patients across cities.
Today, India performs tens of thousands of breast augmentations annually, with demand growing year on year. The Association of Plastic Surgeons of India (APSI) has developed robust safety guidelines, and a new generation of M.Ch.-qualified plastic surgeons brings world-class technique to every major city — including Kolkata.
Social taboo has not vanished — but it has weakened significantly as results have become visible, natural, and undeniably positive. Women in India today are making informed, confident choices about their bodies, supported by qualified surgeons who treat every consultation with the discretion and respect it deserves.
BREAST AUGMENTATION IN KOLKATA — WHERE CCA STANDS
Kolkata has always had skilled plastic surgeons — but few with the sub-specialisation, the consistent volume, and the personal surgical commitment that builds genuine expertise. At Calcutta Cosmo Aid, Dr. Anand Kumar Nagwani — M.B.B.S., M.S., M.Ch. Plastic Surgery — has performed breast augmentation surgeries for over two decades, making him one of the most experienced and trusted breast surgeons in Eastern India. Every surgery is performed by Dr. Nagwani personally. That is not a policy — it is a promise.
WHY WOMEN
CHOOSE
BREAST AUG.
"The decision is deeply personal. It is never about pressure — it is about a woman reclaiming how she feels in her own body."
Every woman who walks into Calcutta Cosmo Aid carries a different story. Some have lived with asymmetry since adolescence. Some have watched their bodies change after pregnancy or significant weight loss. Some have simply never felt comfortable in their own skin and are finally, quietly, choosing to do something about it. There is no single reason — and no wrong one. What matters is that the choice is informed, considered, and entirely your own.
Many women describe a lifelong disconnect between how they look and how they feel inside. Breast augmentation, when done right, is not about vanity — it is about alignment. Patients consistently report improved self-esteem, better body image, and greater comfort in social situations after surgery.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding reshape the breasts in ways that diet and exercise cannot reverse. Volume loss, sagging, and asymmetry are common — and for many mothers, they represent a body they no longer recognise. Augmentation, sometimes combined with a lift, helps restore the pre-pregnancy shape.
Breast asymmetry — where one breast is noticeably different in size or shape from the other — affects a large proportion of women. While mild differences are normal, significant asymmetry can cause emotional distress, difficulty with clothing, and postural issues. Augmentation precisely addresses the imbalance.
Losing a large amount of weight is a tremendous achievement — but it often leaves the breasts deflated and soft. The skin stretches but the underlying volume is gone. Breast augmentation restores fullness and proportion, completing the transformation that weight loss began.
A desire to fill out clothes better, to feel proportionate, or to wear certain styles comfortably are completely valid reasons. Many women describe finally being able to dress how they have always wanted to — without padding, without engineering, without the constant awareness of the gap between what they want to look like and what they do.
For women who have undergone mastectomy or lumpectomy — whether due to cancer or risk reduction — breast reconstruction through augmentation is a deeply meaningful step. Dr. Nagwani approaches reconstructive cases with the same artistic care and technical precision as aesthetic ones, restoring not just form but wholeness.
AN HONEST WORD FROM DR. NAGWANI
Breast augmentation is not for everyone — and a good surgeon will tell you that plainly. At your consultation, Dr. Nagwani will have an open, unhurried conversation about your expectations, your anatomy, and what surgery can and cannot achieve. If you are a good candidate, you will know exactly what to expect. If you are not, he will tell you that too — and suggest what might actually help. The goal is never to sell a surgery. The goal is always the right outcome for you.

IMPLANT
TYPES &
OPTIONS
"Choosing the right implant is not about picking the biggest or the most popular — it is about what is right for your body, your lifestyle, and your vision of yourself."
Breast implants differ in three key ways: what they are filled with, what shape they are, and where they are placed. Each decision affects how your results look, feel, and last. Here is a clear guide to every option — so your consultation with Dr. Nagwani is a conversation, not a surprise.Silicone Gel Implants
Silicone gel implants consist of a silicone elastomer shell filled with a viscous silicone gel. They feel significantly more natural than saline — softer, closer to the feel of real breast tissue. This is the most commonly used implant type in India and worldwide, and the one Dr. Nagwani most frequently recommends for patients who want a natural result. All silicone implants used at CCA are from CE-marked or FDA-approved manufacturers.
ADVANTAGES
- Most natural feel — closest to real breast tissue
- Less visible rippling under the skin
- Available in a wide range of sizes and profiles
- Long-established safety record (60+ years)
- Better suited for thinner patients
CONSIDERATIONS
- Rupture is "silent" — regular MRI monitoring recommended
- Slightly larger incision needed than saline
- Requires screening if rupture is suspected
Saline Implants
Saline implants use the same silicone outer shell as silicone implants — but are filled with sterile salt water (saline) after they are placed. They feel firmer than silicone and can sometimes have a slight sloshing quality in thinner patients. Their key advantage is safety in rupture: if the shell fails, the saline is simply absorbed harmlessly by the body, and deflation is immediately obvious — no silent rupture risk.
ADVANTAGES
- Rupture is immediately visible (implant deflates)
- No risk from leaking fill material
- Smaller incision — filled after insertion
- Generally lower cost
- Volume can be fine-tuned at surgery
CONSIDERATIONS
- Firmer feel — less natural than silicone gel
- More visible rippling in thin patients
- Not recommended for patients with very little breast tissue
Cohesive Gel — "Gummy Bear" Implants
Cohesive gel implants are a next-generation evolution of silicone implants. The gel inside is highly cross-linked — meaning it holds its shape even if the shell is cut open (hence the "gummy bear" nickname). They come primarily in an anatomical (teardrop) shape, offering the most natural-looking results, particularly for patients with minimal existing breast tissue. They represent the current gold standard in breast augmentation globally.
ADVANTAGES
- Most natural shape — mimics the natural breast profile
- No gel migration even if shell ruptures
- Excellent long-term shape retention
- Ideal for thin patients or those with little native tissue
- Lower risk of rippling or folding
CONSIDERATIONS
- Slightly firmer feel than standard silicone gel
- Rotation can alter appearance (anatomical shape)
- Generally higher cost than standard silicone
ROUND VS ANATOMICAL SHAPE
The shape of the implant determines the overall silhouette you achieve
Round implants add fullness to both the upper and lower breast equally. They create a slightly more "augmented" look with visible upper pole fullness — the cleavage area has more projection. They also carry no rotation risk since they are symmetrical. A popular choice for patients who want noticeable, defined fullness.
Anatomical (teardrop) implants are fuller at the bottom and tapered at the top — mirroring the natural shape of the breast. They produce results that look indistinguishable from natural breasts, with a gentle slope at the top rather than a rounded projection. The preferred choice for patients seeking a subtle, undetectable enhancement.
"Neither shape is universally better. The right choice depends on your existing breast tissue, your chest width, and what result you are trying to achieve. Dr. Nagwani will show you projected outcomes for both shapes during your consultation — so you can see, not just imagine, your result."
IMPLANT PLACEMENT
Where the implant sits relative to your chest muscleThe implant is placed beneath the pectoralis major chest muscle. This provides more natural coverage, lower risk of visible rippling, and is less likely to interfere with mammograms. Mild discomfort from the muscle in the first week is expected. Most commonly recommended, especially for patients with thin breast tissue.
Most commonly recommendedThe implant sits between the breast tissue and the chest muscle. Recovery is slightly easier since the muscle is not disturbed. Better suited for patients with sufficient existing breast tissue who want a more projected result. May show slight animation distortion with muscle movement in some patients.
Good for patients with adequate tissueHOW DR. NAGWANI HELPS YOU DECIDE
There is no single correct implant — there is only the correct implant for you. At your consultation, Dr. Nagwani follows a structured approach to narrow down the best option for your anatomy, your goals, and your lifestyle. Here is how that process works.
TYPES OF
BREAST
SURGERY
"Breast augmentation is one procedure — but breast surgery encompasses a whole family of interventions, each addressing a different concern and goal."
Not every woman who visits Dr. Nagwani needs an implant. Some need a lift. Some need a reduction. Some need reconstruction after illness. Some need a combination. Understanding the full spectrum helps you arrive at your consultation with clarity — and leave with the right plan for your body.THE FOUR CORE PROCEDURES
Each addresses a distinct concern — sometimes one, sometimes several at once
AUGMENTATION
The placement of an implant — silicone, saline, or cohesive gel — to increase breast volume, improve symmetry, or restore fullness lost after pregnancy or weight loss. The goal is always a natural, proportionate result that complements your body rather than overwhelms it. Performed entirely by Dr. Nagwani under general anaesthesia in 60–90 minutes.
LIFT
A breast lift removes excess skin and repositions the nipple-areola complex higher on the breast mound — restoring a youthful, perky appearance without necessarily adding volume. Ideal for women whose breasts have good volume but have lost their shape and position due to gravity, pregnancy, or ageing. Often combined with augmentation for the most complete rejuvenation.
REDUCTION
Breast reduction removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a breast size more proportionate to the body. It is one of the most life-changing procedures in plastic surgery — relieving chronic neck pain, back pain, skin rashes under the fold, and postural problems caused by overly large breasts. Patients consistently report dramatically improved quality of life, comfort, and physical freedom after surgery.
RECONSTRUCTION
Reconstruction restores the breast mound after mastectomy or lumpectomy — whether due to breast cancer, prophylactic surgery, or trauma. It may involve implants, the patient's own tissue (flap reconstruction), or a combination of both. Dr. Nagwani approaches reconstruction with great sensitivity — understanding that for these patients, the surgery represents not cosmetic enhancement but wholeness restored.
COMBINATION PROCEDURES
Sometimes the best result comes from doing two things in the same surgeryThe most commonly combined procedure — an implant adds volume while a mastopexy lifts and repositions. Ideal for women who have lost both volume and shape after pregnancy or significant weight loss. Together they achieve what neither can alone: fullness and youthful position.
Significant size difference between the two breasts is treated with a combination approach — augmenting the smaller side, reducing or lifting the larger, or both. The goal is matched symmetry and a balanced silhouette. This requires careful surgical planning and Dr. Nagwani's precise eye for proportion.
Implants are not lifetime devices. Over time — typically after 10–15 years — replacement may be needed due to capsular contracture, rupture, or simply a desire to change size or type. Dr. Nagwani performs revision augmentation with the same precision as primary surgery, correcting any complications from prior procedures.
WHICH PROCEDURE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
| Your Concern | Most Likely Procedure | What It Addresses |
|---|---|---|
| Too small / lack of volume | Breast Augmentation | Adds implant to increase size and fullness |
| Sagging / drooping after pregnancy | Breast Lift (Mastopexy) | Removes skin, repositions nipple upward |
| Both small and drooping | Augmentation + Lift | Adds volume and corrects position simultaneously |
| Too large — back/neck pain, discomfort | Breast Reduction | Removes tissue, reduces size and weight |
| One breast larger than the other | Asymmetry Correction | Combination approach to match both sides |
| Post-mastectomy or cancer surgery | Breast Reconstruction | Restores breast mound using implant or tissue |
| Old implants — hardening or discomfort | Implant Revision / Replacement | Removes and replaces or corrects prior surgery |
"Not sure which procedure applies to you? That is exactly what the consultation is for. Bring your concerns — Dr. Nagwani will do the mapping."

YOUR
RESULTS
TIMELINE
"Patience is part of the process. Every week after surgery, your body is quietly doing its finest work — healing, settling, revealing."
One of the most common questions patients ask is: when will I see my final result? The honest answer is that breast augmentation results unfold gradually over several weeks and months. Understanding this timeline — what is normal, what to expect, and when to feel reassured — makes the recovery period far easier to navigate.Surgery

WEEK BY WEEK — WHAT TO EXPECT
A realistic, honest account of your recovery journey
You wake up wearing a surgical bra with relief and happiness that your surgery has been completed. The breasts will feel very tight, heavy, and high on the chest — this is completely normal. Implants placed under the muscle in particular sit high initially because the muscle hasn't yet relaxed. Pain is managed with medication. Most patients describe it as a strong pressure rather than sharp pain. You are discharged on Day 0 or the day of opertion with written instructions. Your desire is fullfilled
Days 2 through 5 are typically the most uncomfortable. Swelling and bruising are at their peak. The breasts may look and feel unnaturally firm, high, and large — nothing like the final result. This is normal and expected. Pain medication manages the discomfort well. Sleep on your back with your upper body slightly elevated. Short, gentle walks around the house are encouraged to support circulation. No lifting, no bending, no reaching overhead.
At day 7, you return to CCA for a wound check. Dr. Nagwani examines the incision sites, removes any external dressings, and assesses your progress. Swelling is beginning to reduce. Most patients at this stage can manage with paracetamol rather than stronger medication. Light desk work and gentle walking are fine. Driving is not yet recommended. The bra is worn day and night.
By two weeks most patients feel dramatically better. Bruising has largely resolved. Swelling continues to reduce, and you begin to see something closer to your actual result — though the implants are still sitting high and may feel firm. You can return to light work, light cooking, and slow walks. The breasts may still feel slightly numb or hypersensitive in patches — this is nerves recovering, which is entirely normal and resolves over time.
Six weeks is the primary recovery milestone. Dr. Nagwani clears most patients for exercise, swimming, and normal sleeping positions. The implants have begun to settle — dropping slightly from their initially high position as the muscle relaxes. The shape is looking far more natural. Scars are still pink and visible but beginning their long journey to fading. Most patients at this stage feel genuinely excited about their results.
At three months, Dr. Nagwani conducts a final review. By this stage the implants have fully settled into their pocket. The shape is soft, natural, and proportionate. Swelling is completely resolved. Most patients report that the results feel like their own body — not like something foreign. Scars continue fading. This is the result you will carry forward, and the visit is an important moment of shared satisfaction between you and Dr. Nagwani.
Between six and eighteen months, incision scars continue their natural fading process — transitioning from pink to silver to nearly invisible. The breasts are fully integrated into the body's sense of self. Patients describe feeling completely comfortable, confident, and at home in their new shape. The surgery, by this point, is simply part of how they look — natural, effortless, and entirely their own.
RECOVERY DO'S & DON'TS

- 🚫No smoking — smoking severely impairs healing and increases complication risk
- 🚫No alcohol for the first week — it interacts with medications and increases swelling
- 🚫No underwire bras until cleared by Dr. Nagwani (typically after 6–8 weeks)
- 🚫No massaging or pressing the implants unless specifically instructed to do so
LONG-TERM RESULTS — WHAT LASTS
Modern breast implants are designed for durability, but they are not lifetime devices. Understanding the long-term picture helps you plan and maintain your results confidently.
With proper care, most patients enjoy their augmentation results for 10–15 years or more before any replacement is considered. Many women go significantly longer. The decision to replace is based on clinical need — not an automatic expiry date.
Dr. Nagwani schedules periodic reviews for all his breast augmentation patients. These visits are brief, reassuring, and ensure any changes are detected and addressed early.
DR. ANAND
KUMAR NAGWANI
M.B.B.S. · M.S. · M.Ch. Plastic Surgery
Dr. Anand Kumar Nagwani is the founder and lead surgeon of Calcutta Cosmo Aid, Kolkata's trusted cosmetic and plastic surgery clinic in Bhowanipur. With over two decades of surgical practice and an M.Ch. in Plastic Surgery — the highest surgical qualification in India — Dr. Nagwani has built a reputation founded not on marketing, but on results.
He has performed over 50,000 successful procedures spanning breast augmentation, hair transplant, hypospadias repair, rhinoplasty, and a full range of cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries. His hypospadias work has drawn patients from across India, establishing him as one of the country's recognised specialists in this complex field.
What distinguishes Dr. Nagwani is not just his qualifications. It is his personal commitment — every surgery at Calcutta Cosmo Aid is performed by Dr. Nagwani and his team. When you book with him, you operate with him.
"Every patient who comes to me has placed their trust in me personally — not in a system or a brand. That trust is honoured in the operating theatre, every single time. I perform every surgery myself. That is my promise and it has never changed in twenty years."
WHY PATIENTS CHOOSE DR. NAGWANI
Six reasons that go beyond credentials
At CCA, Dr. Nagwani performs every breast augmentation procedure himself — beginning to end. No handovers, no substitutions. What you see in the consultation is what you get in the theatre.
M.Ch. in Plastic Surgery is the apex of surgical training in India — a rigorous post-M.S. super-specialisation. Very few surgeons practising cosmetic surgery in Kolkata hold this qualification. It is the difference between a cosmetic doctor and a trained plastic surgeon.
Dr. Nagwani will tell you when a procedure is not right for you. He will suggest alternatives. He will manage expectations plainly. Patients who have consulted elsewhere describe his consultations as refreshingly direct — no pressure, no upselling, just clarity.
While based in Bhowanipur, Kolkata, Dr. Nagwani's practice draws patients from West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, and beyond — particularly for hypospadias repair and complex reconstructive cases. His reach speaks to his reputation.
With over 80,000 YouTube subscribers across three channels, Dr. Nagwani has built one of India's most accessible surgical education platforms. Patients arrive informed, not anxious — because they have already seen his work, his approach, and his outcomes.
CCA has operated for nearly two decades from the same location under the same surgeon. In cosmetic surgery — a field prone to pop-up clinics and fly-by-night practitioners — this continuity of care, location, and surgeon is itself a form of credibility.
THE PERSONAL SURGERY PROMISE — WHAT IT MEANS IN PRACTICE
When Dr. Nagwani says every surgery is performed personally, this is not a marketing phrase. It is a description of how Calcutta Cosmo Aid has operated since its founding.
Many clinics — even reputable ones — use a model where the consulting surgeon hands the patient over to a resident or junior colleague once in theatre. This happens more often than patients realise, and more often than clinics disclose.
At CCA, the model is different by design. Dr. Nagwani deliberately limits his surgical volume to what he can personally deliver. Fewer surgeries. More attention. Better outcomes.

Ask on WhatsAppBreast augmentation is right for women who are in good general health, have realistic expectations, and are making the decision for themselves — not because of external pressure. The best candidates are women with adequate skin and tissue, stable weight, and a clear understanding of what surgery can and cannot achieve.
The only way to know with certainty is through a personal consultation with Dr. Nagwani. He will examine your anatomy, listen to your goals, and give you an honest, direct answer — including if he believes you are not a suitable candidate.
The general recommendation is 18 years for saline implants and 21 years for silicone implants — by which age the breasts have fully developed. Dr. Nagwani follows these guidelines carefully. For reconstructive cases (e.g., post-mastectomy or congenital conditions), exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Most women can breastfeed after augmentation, particularly when the inframammary (under-breast fold) incision is used, as this approach least disturbs the milk ducts and nipple nerves. The periareolar incision carries a slightly higher risk of affecting breastfeeding. Dr. Nagwani takes future breastfeeding plans into account when recommending an incision approach.
Implants do not prevent mammograms, but they do require special technique. Always inform your radiologist that you have implants before your screening. Additional displacement views (Eklund technique) are used to examine all breast tissue around the implant. Submuscular placement actually makes mammograms easier than subglandular, as the implant is behind the tissue being examined.
Dr. Nagwani's pre-surgical consultation process is specifically designed to minimise this risk — through careful goal-setting, anatomy assessment, and realistic expectation management. In the rare case where a patient is not satisfied, Dr. Nagwani discusses revision options directly and personally. He does not dismiss concerns or hand patients to administrative staff.
Yes — a significant proportion of CCA's patients travel from other states including Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Odisha, and beyond. Dr. Nagwani's team assists outstation patients with surgical scheduling, local accommodation guidance, and remote post-operative follow-up where in-person visits are not possible. WhatsApp is the most convenient way to begin the conversation.
For most patients, silicone gel implants feel more natural — closer to real breast tissue — which is why they are more widely used. Saline implants are firmer but offer the advantage of immediate, visible rupture detection. Cohesive "gummy bear" silicone is the modern gold standard, combining natural feel with shape stability. The right choice depends on your anatomy, tissue coverage, and goals — Dr. Nagwani recommends based on your specific case, not general preference.
Size is measured in cubic centimetres (cc), not bra cup size — because the same implant produces different results depending on the patient's chest width, existing tissue, and body frame. Dr. Nagwani uses your chest measurements, existing breast dimensions, and your goals to recommend a range of sizes. He may use sizers — trial implants placed in a special bra — so you can see and feel the difference before committing.
No — this is a widespread myth. There is no mandatory 10-year replacement policy. Modern implants are designed for durability and many patients keep them for 15–20 years or longer without any issues. Replacement is done only when there is a clinical reason — rupture, capsular contracture, or a personal desire to change size or type. Dr. Nagwani monitors all his augmentation patients with periodic reviews.
With the right implant type, size, and placement for your anatomy, the result should feel natural both to you and to anyone else. Submuscular placement with cohesive gel implants, sized appropriately for your frame, produces results that are virtually indistinguishable from natural breast tissue. The goal at CCA is always a result that looks and feels like it belongs to you — not like an obvious augmentation.
Capsular contracture occurs when the natural scar tissue that forms around an implant thickens and tightens, causing firmness, discomfort, or shape distortion. It is the most common complication of breast augmentation, occurring in roughly 10–15% of patients over their lifetime. The risk is reduced through submuscular placement, textured implant surfaces, meticulous sterile technique, and no-touch implant handling — all of which are standard practice at CCA. If contracture develops, it is treatable.
Yes — without exception. Every surgery at Calcutta Cosmo Aid is performed by Dr. Anand Kumar Nagwani personally, from the first incision to the final suture. He does not delegate surgical procedures to residents or junior surgeons. This has been the founding principle of CCA since its inception and has not changed in over two decades.
Standard breast augmentation takes 60 to 90 minutes under general anaesthesia. Combined procedures — such as augmentation with a lift — take longer, typically 2.5 to 3.5 hours. You are completely asleep throughout and feel nothing. A qualified anaesthesiologist monitors you continuously from the moment you enter the theatre to the moment you wake in recovery.
All surgery leaves scars, but the scars from breast augmentation are deliberately small and strategically placed to be as inconspicuous as possible. The inframammary incision leaves a scar in the natural breast fold — invisible when standing and barely visible even when lying down. Scars are initially pink, then fade to silvery white over 12–18 months. Dr. Nagwani's suturing technique is designed to minimise scar width and visibility.
You will receive a full pre-operative instruction sheet at your final pre-surgery appointment. Key preparations: stop smoking at least 4 weeks before surgery; stop blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen) as directed; fast from midnight the night before; arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you the first night; prepare a recovery area at home with loose comfortable clothing, extra pillows, and easy-access food and medications.
General anaesthesia is used — you are fully asleep and experience no pain or awareness during the procedure. A qualified, experienced anaesthesiologist is dedicated to your care throughout surgery, monitoring your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and depth of anaesthesia continuously. General anaesthesia for healthy patients undergoing elective surgery of this duration has an extremely low risk profile.
Most patients describe the discomfort as a strong tightness or pressure rather than sharp pain — particularly with submuscular implants, where the chest muscle is temporarily stretched. Pain is well managed with prescribed medication. The first 2–3 days are the most uncomfortable; by day 5–7, most patients need only paracetamol for relief. Pain that is worsening rather than improving, or accompanied by fever, should be reported to Dr. Nagwani's clinic immediately.
For desk-based or light work — typically 7 to 10 days. For physically demanding work involving lifting, carrying, or strenuous activity — at least 6 weeks. Dr. Nagwani will advise specifically based on your job and your recovery progress at the one-week follow-up.
Initial results are visible within days, but the true final result takes 3 to 6 months as swelling fully resolves and implants settle into their natural position. At 6–8 weeks the shape looks substantially like the final result. At 3 months Dr. Nagwani conducts a final review confirming everything has settled as planned. Scars continue to fade for up to 18 months.
Light walking is encouraged from Day 2. At 6 weeks, most patients are cleared for swimming, yoga, and moderate exercise. High-impact activities — running, weight training, contact sports — are typically permitted from 8 weeks onwards. Exercises that directly engage the pectoral muscles (push-ups, chest press) are reintroduced gradually and with Dr. Nagwani's specific guidance.
Most surgeons advise waiting at least 10–14 days before flying, as cabin pressure changes and prolonged sitting increase the risk of swelling and deep vein thrombosis in the early post-operative period. For outstation patients, Dr. Nagwani plans the surgical date and follow-up schedule to allow adequate recovery before travel home. Discuss your travel plans at your consultation so the timing can be optimised.
Yes — when from reputable manufacturers and placed by a qualified plastic surgeon. Modern silicone breast implants have been studied more extensively than almost any other medical device. The FDA's 2006 re-approval of silicone implants followed 14 years of intensive research and concluded they are safe for use. CE-marked and FDA-approved implants used at CCA meet the highest international safety standards.
No — extensive research has found no link between breast implants and breast cancer. However, a very rare condition called BIA-ALCL (Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma) has been associated specifically with textured implants from certain manufacturers — not smooth or round silicone implants. The risk is extremely small and the condition, when detected early, is highly treatable. Dr. Nagwani will discuss this transparently at your consultation.
Like all surgery, breast augmentation carries risks. The most common include: capsular contracture (scar tissue hardening around the implant), implant rupture or leakage, changes in nipple sensation, asymmetry, infection, and haematoma (bleeding). Serious complications are uncommon in healthy patients operated on by experienced surgeons in proper facilities. Dr. Nagwani discusses all risks openly at your consultation — so there are no surprises.
Saline rupture is immediately obvious — the implant deflates within days and the saline is absorbed harmlessly by the body. Silicone rupture is often "silent" — the cohesive gel stays in place within the capsule and there may be no immediate signs. This is why periodic MRI screening is recommended for silicone implants. In both cases, the solution is surgical removal and replacement. Rupture does not pose an immediate health danger, but it should be addressed promptly.
Look for M.Ch. in Plastic Surgery — the highest surgical qualification in India, awarded after M.B.B.S. and M.S., following a competitive super-specialisation programme. Do not confuse a cosmetic surgeon (often a general physician with minimal surgical training) with a plastic surgeon. Ask to see before-and-after results. Ask directly who performs the surgery. Ask how many of this specific procedure they have done. Dr. Nagwani's qualifications, experience, and 20-year track record are openly available for scrutiny.
The cost of breast augmentation varies depending on the implant type chosen, the surgical approach, whether a combination procedure is required, and your individual anatomy. CCA does not publish a fixed price list because no two patients are identical. A detailed, transparent cost breakdown is provided at your consultation — with no hidden fees and no pressure. Contact us via WhatsApp or phone to book your consultation and discuss costs directly with Dr. Nagwani's team.
In cosmetic surgery, cost-cutting almost always means one of three things: cheaper implants from unverified manufacturers, a less qualified surgeon, or a clinic that cuts corners on sterility, anaesthesia, or post-operative care. All three carry real risks. A revision surgery to correct a poor primary augmentation costs significantly more — financially and emotionally — than choosing a qualified surgeon the first time. The goal is a result you live with for decades. Invest accordingly.
